Dr. Henninger recommends that children have their first eye exam before the age of one, again at three years old and then before entering school. School-age children should have a yearly exam. Children can be unaware of issues and a thorough exam can catch some things early as well as ensure that they are prepared and able to learn their best. Teens and adults up to the age of forty-five should focus on an exam every other year. If you are a contact lens wearer, have other health issues or are older than forty-five, an annual exam is recommended. 

At your appointment, you should expect to have an extensive health review and test of your prescription. The doctor will determine if you are near- or far-sighted and what your exact best prescription is to see as clear as possible. Depending on the patient, we may use dilating eye drops. This process allows us to really see inside your eyes and better determine if there are any abnormalities. Dilating your eyes can be uncomfortable and last for hours, so we do recommend you have someone on hand to drive you home.
