Contact Lens Exams: Why Do They Matter?

A contact lens exam is a specialized examination performed by an eye care professional to ensure the proper fit of contact lenses on your eyes. This exam goes beyond a general eye examination which assesses your visual acuity and health. A contact lens exam focuses specifically on the size and shape of your eyes, the health of your cornea, and the tear film on your eye’s surface. These factors are crucial for ensuring comfortable, safe, and effective use of contact lenses. It’s not only about correcting vision but also about maintaining the overall health of your eyes; hence, the importance of regular contact lens exams cannot be overstated.

Why Are Contact Lenses Beneficial?

Contact lenses offer several advantages over glasses. They provide a natural field of view, unrestricted by the frame of glasses. They also remain unaffected by weather conditions and don’t fog up in cold weather as glasses can. Not to mention, they allow you to freely participate in sports and outdoor activities without the fear of breaking your eyewear.

Why Are Regular Contact Lens Exams Necessary?

While contact lenses are a convenient alternative to glasses, they require regular checkups to ensure they are not causing any harm to your eyes. An improperly fitted lens can lead to dryness, irritation, or even corneal trauma. Regular contact lens exams help prevent these issues and maintain your eye health.

What Happens During a Contact Lens Exam?

A typical contact lens exam includes measuring visual accuracy, checking for eye diseases, and assessing lens fit and condition. At Trumansburg Optical, Dr. Neil Henninger, a member of the American Optometric Association with decades of experience, ensures that your lenses are fitted correctly and comfortably.

Testing visual accuracy involves reading a standard eye chart while checking for eye diseases, which requires specialized equipment. Trumansburg Optical is equipped with top-end equipment to carry out these tests effectively. The fitting of the lens is assessed through a microscopic examination of the lens on the eye to ensure it’s not too tight or loose.

Trumansburg Optical offers a wide selection of contact lenses that fit different lifestyle needs and ensure comfort. Whether you prefer daily, weekly, or monthly disposables or are interested in options such as bifocal/multifocal, toric, or colored lenses, we have you covered.
