Have You Scheduled Your Child’s Back-to-School Eye Exam? Why It’s Important

Your child’s backpack is loaded with new school supplies, and their closet is stocked with fresh outfits—but have you scheduled their back-to-school eye exam yet? Here’s a surprising fact to consider: over 25% of children aged 2–17 need glasses or contacts, with percentages only increasing as they get older.

At Trumansburg Optical, we’ve been performing pediatric eye exams since 2005, and we’ve seen firsthand how undiagnosed vision problems can hold kids back. In this post, we’ll explore why back-to-school eye exams are key for children’s success.

Why Are Back-to-School Eye Exams Crucial?

1. Undetected Vision Problems

Kids often don’t realize their vision is blurry because they assume everyone sees the way they do. This can result in common problems, like nearsightedness or astigmatism, going unnoticed. Without an eye exam, these issues may worsen, affecting their quality of life.

2. Impact on Learning

Did you know that 80% of learning is visual? From reading the whiteboard to completing worksheets, vision plays an enormous role in academic success. For kids with undiagnosed vision problems, school can quickly become frustrating.

Vision-related learning difficulties often manifest in poor reading comprehension, headaches, or trouble focusing. Annual eye exams can provide solutions, like prescription glasses, enabling students to thrive academically.

3. Reduced Risk of Digital Eye Strain

Students increasingly rely on digital devices for learning, exposing them to a higher risk of digital eye strain. Long hours on screens can lead to symptoms like headaches, blurry vision, and tired eyes.

During a back-to-school eye exam, an eye doctor can assess for digital eye strain and offer tailored solutions, such as glasses with blue-light-blocking lenses or tips for reducing screen-related discomfort.

4. Detecting Overall Health Concerns

Eye exams can do more than just check for vision problems. The eyes often reveal signs of broader health issues, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. Early detection not only helps safeguard your child’s overall health but also ensures these conditions do not interfere with their ability to learn and grow.

5. Boosting Confidence and Participation

Children who struggle to see may shy away from classroom activities or social interactions. Uncorrected vision issues often lead to a lack of confidence, which can affect their ability to participate in sports, art projects, or group discussions.

Corrective eyewear not only ensures clear vision but also boosts confidence, helping kids fully engage in both academics and extracurriculars.

When Should You Schedule Your Child’s Back-to-School Eye Exam?

Scheduling your child’s eye exam sometime during the summer is often the best choice to avoid the busy, last-minute rush that comes right before the school year begins. Eye care providers tend to have more availability during this time, allowing for greater flexibility in booking an appointment at your convenience. Alternatively, if summer passes you by, scheduling the exam very early in the school year is another great option to ensure your child has clear vision without waiting too long.

How Can You Prepare Your Child for Their Back-to-School Eye Exam?

Start the Conversation Early

Explain to your child that an eye exam is a simple, painless way to make sure their eyes are healthy and strong. Reassure them by describing what will happen during the exam, like reading an eye chart or looking at pictures.

Bring Comfort Items

If your child feels nervous, pack a familiar toy or book to help them relax in the waiting room.

Share Observations with the Doctor

Ahead of the appointment, note any signs of vision trouble, such as squinting, excessive blinking, or complaints of headaches. Sharing these with the optometrist will guide the assessment.

Plan Fun Afterwards

Turn the eye exam into a positive experience by planning a fun activity afterward, like a trip to the playground or a favorite restaurant.

Ensure a Strong Start to the School Year

Ensuring your child has clear vision is one of the easiest ways to set them up for success—in school and beyond. Don’t leave your child’s eye health to chance. What Our Patients say

"This place is wonderful. The person upfront is extremely warm and very helpful. They really work with you to find the best fit. The doctor did a great job. I appreciated the high tech instruments that weren't at my old doctors office as they were more comfortable to use."
